We have many volunteer opportunities in Dorset at our projects located across Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole, Wimborne and Blandford. These include homelessness, foodbanks, lone parent families, and Faithworks CMA a free debt advice and budget support service.

We provide non-judgemental, practical support and advice as we come alongside those facing, and overcoming, a time of crisis in their lives. We believe in equipping people with the tools they need to develop knowledge, confidence and relationships as they create a brighter, more resilient future.

Community Money Advice Volunteer – Wimborne Foodbank+

Project: CMA (Community Money Advice)
Location: Wimborne Foodbank+
Time Commitment: Flexible hours, to be discussed

Role Description: Faithworks CMA (Community Money Advice) operate two services:

  1. Debt Advice – a service for those who are struggling to pay their debts
  2. Budgeting Support –help to manage finances with the aim of not going into debt

We operate under the framework of CMA, a national charity.

We are looking for volunteers to support our Lead Debt Advisor at Wimborne Foodbank, helping to run appointments where individuals can receive practical support to help them on their journey out of debt, and supporting with queries as people come through the Food Bank.

Experience dealing with debt or budgeting is desirable, but not essential, as full training will be provided.

Key Attributes Needed: friendly, good at communicating, patient, practical, sensitive, caring, encouraging, able to work as part of a team and reliable.

You Will Gain Experience in: learning about debt management and budgeting, working with vulnerable adults, being part of a team.

SMILE Volunteer

Project: SMILE (Solo Parent Families)
Location: Various locations across Poole
Time Commitment: Flexible hours, to be discussed

Role Description: SMILE provides support, activities and friendship for single parent families. Our goal is to create a community of families who support each other and live everyday to the full.

We are looking for volunteers to help with fun days out, our community meal, our coffee mornings, and creches. We need volunteers to assist with various roles including: sitting with families, helping them to engage with crafts and board games, helping children with homework, signposting parents to other services, and looking after children while we run practical support and courses for parents, as well as preparing and serving food at our community meal.

Key Attributes Needed: friendly, good at communicating, patient, enjoy working with children, sensitive, caring, encouraging, able to work as part of a team and reliable.

You Will Gain Experience in: supporting lone parent families, helping in the community, working with children, working as part of a team and problem solving.

Homelessness Volunteer (Half-Time)

Project: Half-Time
Location: Half-Time, St. Mike’s Church, Bournemouth
Time Commitment: Variable on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Role Description: Half-Time serves people who are rough sleeping and vulnerably housed at our hub at St. Mike’s Church in Bournemouth. On Wednesdays and Fridays we offer appointments with access to: hot showers, lockers, snacks, toiletries, phone charging, and the opportunity to talk through issues. On Thursdays we run ‘Thursday Club’ for those who are vulnerably housed, this is an opportunity for people to take part in fun activities and build community and friendship in a safe and encouraging space. As a volunteer, you will be supporting our staff with appointments and activities, helping the homeless find safety and support, and providing practical help.

Key Tasks: listening to visitors with empathy and offering encouragement, helping with appointments and practical support (laundry, showers, lockers, food etc), and supporting with welcoming guests.

Key Attributes Needed: a “people’s person”, someone who is a good listener, caring and empathetic, non-judgemental and a team player.

You Will Gain Experience in: understanding the needs of those who were/are at risk of sleeping on the street, being part of a team of volunteers, gain a knowledge of homelessness support available across BCP, applying your faith in a practical and caring way.

Poole Foodbank+ Driver & Driver’s Assistant

Project: Poole Foodbank+
Location: Poole Foodbank+ Store, Dolphin Centre
Time Commitment: Flexible hours, to be discussed

Role Description: Poole Foodbank+ provides emergency food parcels for people in crisis, working in partnership with organisations across the community.

We are looking for a driver and driver’s assistant to help transport emergency supplies to and from our warehouse and other sites in Poole. Drivers play a fundamental role in the running of the Foodbank – collecting food donations from a variety of locations across the local area as well as distributing the sorted donations from the warehouse to the local Foodbank centres.

Key Tasks: transporting sorted food from the warehouse to the local Foodbank+ centres, collecting food donations from local supermarkets and carrying heavy boxes of canned foods.

You will be provided all the training and support needed before starting your role, as well as a main contact for ongoing support.

*Please note that drivers will need a driving licence with less than 3 points on

Key Attributes Needed: the role requires physical fitness and strength to move and lift heavy items, confidence to drive a transit van, adaptable, flexible, personable, committed, efficient, prompt in collecting food donations.

You Will Gain Experience in: serving the community, team work, understanding the process of ‘goods in’ and ‘goods out’ and stock rotation, and understanding the difference between working for a commercial company and supporting a charity that has stewardship responsibilities for managing donations.

Poole Town Pastor

Project: Poole Town Pastors
Location: Poole town centre or Upper Parkstone
Time Commitment: 1 or 2 Saturdays a month (Poole town centre), 2.30pm – 4.30pm and occasional festivals, or a weekday afternoon (Upper Parkstone), 2.30pm – 4.30pm

Role Description: you will join a team of Christians from local churches. This team is committed to help calm any tensions, provide practical and emotional support when required.  Town Pastors come alongside young people, the homeless, elderly and lonely, to show our faith and pray with anyone who asks. Training and a uniform is provided.

Key Attributes Needed: be able to listen without being judgemental.

You will gain experience in: listening skills, being part of a team and supporting the general public.

Bournemouth Town Pastor

Project: Bournemouth Town Pastors
Location: Bournemouth town centre
Time Commitment: Saturday, 10pm – Sunday, 2am once a month

Role Description: patrol the town centre of Bournemouth on Saturday nights, helping anyone in need out in the night-time economy. You will be part of a team of either 3 or 4 men/women, with a distinctive uniform, carrying a lightweight bag containing supplies such as water, flip flops, foil blankets etc.

Key Attributes Needed: be compassionate and non-judgemental

You Will Gain Experience in: being part of a team and frontline support for those out in the night-time economy.

Who can volunteer?2023-07-18T10:18:57+01:00

Due to the nature of our projects, we require that our volunteers are 18 or over. Faithworks is a Christian, faith-based organisation, however we have a diverse range of volunteers from all faiths or none.

Who will support me?2023-07-18T10:20:29+01:00

Each project is run by one or more staff members who are there to support you and give you guidance with regards to your role. Our volunteer coordinator is also available to provide any additional support that you may need.

What training will I receive?2023-07-18T10:22:15+01:00

All volunteers are required to complete our Essential Skills training which is run by our volunteer coordinator. This training is done online, however in person training can be organised. If your role involves any heavy lifting, food preparation or dealing with finances (CMA team), specific training will be provided. There is no charge for any of the training.

We require all volunteers to go through a seven-step “safe recruiting” programme that includes: a taster session, completing an application form, two references, DBS check (a requirement for most projects), attending training and regular ongoing training events, signing a volunteer agreement and approval by our Business Support Manager.

Once you’ve filled out the contact form below, our volunteer coordinator will be in touch to organise a taster session with you. This will allow you to view the project and find out more about it. A Risk Assessment may be completed for these.
