Fundraiser: hear Chelsea Flower Show Judge Tamsin Westhorpe

Many of us love a flick through a good garden magazine or watching gardening TV programmes. But have you ever wondered what life is like behind the media scenes for a top garden writer and RHS Chelsea Flower Show judge?

After her sell-out talk last year, which raised over £900 for Wimborne Community Garden, Tamsin Westhorpe, experienced horticultural editor and author, RHS Chelsea Flower Show Judge, podcaster, lecturer and former editor of one of the most loved gardening magazines, ‘The English Garden’ returns to Wimborne.

Tamsin said:

“I hear you say  ‘Why would I be interested in a talk entitled ‘Life as a garden writer’? I want to garden and don’t fancy writing about it”! My talk takes you behind the scenes on how magazines and garden articles are put together.

“You’ll discover how the best gardens are found; what garden techniques are trending and how to feel confident that you are reading the right magazine. My talk promises to be informative, unexpected and entertaining. You never know it might even make you put pen to paper!”

Having started her horticultural career at the age of 17, spending time as a parks’ gardener and greenkeeper, Tamsin is passionate about being hands on in the garden. Her aim is to demystify gardening. She was one of the first female gardeners for Bournemouth Parks Department and has been listed in the Telegraph’s top 100 most influential female gardeners in this country.

Tamsin still finds time to get her hands into the soil as a gardener and curator of Stockton Bury Gardens in Herefordshire – a garden regularly featured in national magazines. She is also editor of the Horticultural Trade Association members magazine and author of three books.

The talk takes place on:
When: Friday 4th October 2024, 7.30pm – 9.30pm
Venue: Beaucroft College Hall, School Lane, Wimborne. BH21 1HQ
Tickets: £12 per person including mulled apple juice and a slice of Dorset Apple Cake.
There will also be a raffle to help raise funds for the garden.

Established in 2022 by the local community and supported by Faithworks, Wimborne Community Garden is nestled within the grounds of Beaucroft Foundation College. Over the last two years, the land has been transformed into a sheltered space with raised beds, fruit trees and plenty of fruit and vegetable patches: a space for the community to come together, share skills and grow food.

This award-winning garden provides fresh produce for Wimborne Food Bank+, Wimborne Community Kitchen and the Beaucroft College’s cafe. It also creates a safe space for people to meet others and build self-worth, confidence and skills through gardening.

Founder Jane Benson said:

“We are thrilled to have Tamsin back to help us fundraise. She is such an interesting and engaging speaker and we are excited to discover what life is like for a professional garden writer.”
