How Christchurch Foodbank+ Furniture Project is Helping to Rebuild Lives
When Sofia* reached out to the team at Christchurch Foodbank team she was in a state of overwhelming uncertainty. Her home in Ukraine had been reduced to rubble by the ongoing conflict, and with her 7-year-old daughter in tow, she had fled the war with only a suitcase of belongings. Her husband and brother had to stay behind, and the safety of her daughter was her top priority. By the time she arrived in Christchurch late at night, Sofia was exhausted and empty-handed, with nothing but a solitary bag of personal effects.
Like many families we support, Sofia faced the trauma of losing her home, compounded by the struggles of starting over without the basic necessities.
Thankfully, Sofia’s landlord, familiar with Christchurch Foodbank+, suggested she contact them. After helping another tenant through the Home Equip project, he wanted to ensure Sofia’s new home was furnished and ready.
Working tirelessly with the landlord, the team prepared the home with essential furniture and household items, creating a safe space amidst the chaos.
Sofia explained: “I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the furniture you delivered. Everything was wonderful, but I especially want to thank you for the bed…
After a long journey, it was amazing to have the bed ready and all set up – my daughter was able to sleep through the night comfortably, and we didn’t have to worry about anything.”
At Christchurch Foodbank+, she found much more than just food. She was offered a warm welcome, a safe space to talk, and an invitation to their weekly Community Supper, where she would meet other families for mutual support, Sofia could improve her English while her daughter could start to learn English and make new friends.
The Home Equip project helped over 163 households throughout 2025 move on from crises like domestic abuse, temporary housing, relationship breakdown, homelessness, and conflict, furnishing their homes, giving hope and providing stability.
“For those starting over, building community is key,” says Tracy, CFB+ Manager. “Our Home Equip project helps people make a home and start a new journey with hope, with ongoing support through CFB+ projects like our Community Suppers.”
Sofia’s story shows how, through compassion and support, we can help families thrive. Thanks to community donations, Christchurch Foodbank+ are able to provide everything needed to furnish a home and rebuild lives. Your financial contribution can make this transformation possible.
