SMILE Mums and Older Local Residents Build DIY Confidence
Residents Build Confidence Through Hands-on DIY Confidence Course
Senior residents and solo parents have been picking up new practical techniques for around the home thanks to Arch Training’s DIY Confidence courses.
The Carpentry Workshop has been buzzing with activity, as participants learned how to take on everyday home maintenance tasks with greater independence. From using a drill and handsaw to measuring accurately, creating raw plugs and installing a bookshelf, the workshop has become a hive of enthusiastic learning.
The DIY Confidence sessions were designed to help senior residents feel more capable when tackling practical jobs around the home. One resident shared how valuable the course had been:
“It was the little things they taught… tricks you’d never think of.”
Led by tutor Leo, the 10-hour course provided an informal and accessible environment for residents to develop both practical skills and the confidence to use them.
The programme also welcomed mums from the SMILE project, which supports solo parents navigating family life without the support of a partner. For many, the course offered the chance to gain the skills needed to handle household maintenance on their own.
Parents embraced the sessions enthusiastically. One mum said:
“Best course I’ve done yet. I’ve learnt so much. I want to do more and am taking on projects at home!”
Arch Training offers a range of practical courses designed to develop confidence and open doors to further education and employment. Alongside DIY Confidence sessions, learners can also explore Carpentry Skills and Barista Skills programmes, helping participants develop new abilities and take positive steps toward a brighter future.
